How We Compared
Exchange rankings are one of the most affiliate-saturated categories on the internet, so it's worth stating our method up front: this comparison is based on published fee schedules, AUSTRAC registration status, and publicly reported user ratings. FuturEdge has no paid placement arrangement with any exchange listed here, and no position is bought.
Fees change frequently. Verify current rates on the exchange's own fee page before depositing — several platforms have adjusted pricing twice this year.
The Fee Reality Nobody Explains Properly
Most beginners compare the headline trading fee and stop. That number is often the smallest cost you pay. There are four separate charges to look at:
Trading fee — the percentage taken on each order. Kraken and Binance are generally lowest for active traders, with Kraken's maker/taker starting from 0.25%/0.40%. On order books, CoinJar Exchange and Kraken Pro both reach 0.10% or below.
Spread — the gap between buy and sell price, and the cost that quietly does the most damage. Swyftx's spreads run roughly 0.2%–0.8% depending on the asset. "Instant buy" interfaces on any platform generally carry wider spreads than order-book trading.
Deposit fee — Swyftx charges nothing for PayID and bank transfers, but 1.99% for credit card. Card deposits are almost always the most expensive route in.
Withdrawal fee — Swyftx and CoinSpot both offer free AUD withdrawals, which matters more than people expect if you cash out regularly.
A 0.1% trading fee with a 1% spread costs you more than a 0.6% fee with a 0.2% spread. Compare total cost, not headline rate.
The Exchanges
Swyftx — the strongest all-rounder for most Australians. A 0.6% flat trading fee is not the cheapest available, but the free PayID deposits, free AUD withdrawals and relatively tight spreads make total cost competitive for normal buying patterns. It holds the highest Trustpilot rating among Australian exchanges at 4.7/5. Best for: regular buyers who want low friction and don't trade constantly.
CoinSpot — a household name locally with the widest coin selection available to Australian residents and genuinely unusual deposit options, including cash deposits at newsagents. The tradeoff is cost: 1% on instant buys is well above competitors. Best for: buyers who want access to smaller-cap assets, or who value the deposit flexibility more than the fee.
Kraken — the fee leader for active traders, with Kraken Pro reaching 0.10% or below on the order book, plus a long operating history and strong security reputation. The interface is less beginner-friendly. Best for: frequent traders comfortable with an order book.
Binance — extensive features and low fees, favoured by experienced traders. Regulatory scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions has been an ongoing theme, so check current Australian status before committing. Best for: experienced traders who need advanced products.
CoinJar — CoinJar Exchange's maker fees at 0.10% or below make it a serious cost contender that gets less attention than it deserves. Best for: cost-focused buyers who want an Australian-domiciled option.
The Non-Fee Factors That Matter More
AUSTRAC registration is not optional. Any exchange serving Australian customers must be registered as a digital currency exchange provider. This is checkable directly on the AUSTRAC register, and it takes two minutes. Do it before your first deposit, not after a problem.
Withdrawal reliability matters more than fee structure in a crisis. The relevant question is not what an exchange charges to withdraw, but whether withdrawals have kept functioning during periods of market stress — a question best answered by user reports over time rather than marketing copy.
Not your keys, not your coins. Every exchange on this list is a custodial service. For amounts you would be materially upset to lose, self-custody in a hardware wallet remains the standard advice, with the exchange used for buying and selling rather than storage.
Quick Recommendations
Buying your first crypto: Swyftx — the balance of low friction, free AUD in and out, and reasonable spreads is hard to beat for occasional purchases.
Trading actively: Kraken Pro or CoinJar Exchange — order-book fees at or below 0.10% compound significantly at volume.
Want the widest coin selection: CoinSpot — accept the 1% instant-buy cost, or use its market feature to reduce it.
Advanced products and derivatives: Binance — with the caveat of checking current regulatory status.
